How to Get Clay in Deep Dish Dungeon

Updated · Materials & Tools

Quick answer

Hit the yellow goo piles (mostly in the sewers) with a Pickaxe. Weapons, the Hammer and fire do nothing to goo, and Clay is not in the demo.

Step by step

  1. Get the Pickaxe first. Clay can’t be collected without it. The Pickaxe has no crafting recipe — you have to find it in the dungeon (see where to find the Pickaxe).
  2. Go to the sewers and look for piles of yellow goo. This is where most goo piles are.
  3. Hit the pile with the Pickaxe. Clay drops at random, so one pile won’t always give the same amount.
  4. A few item spawn points can also produce Clay, but goo piles are the reliable source.

What Clay is used for

Build Ingredients
Smelter (turns Scrap Metal + Coal into Iron Rods) 5 Clay + 5 Scrap Metal
Oven 5 Clay + 1 Grate
Water Pot 4 Clay + 1 Iron Rod
Statue Mold holds up to 16 Clay

The Smelter is usually the reason people need Clay: it lets you make your own Iron Rods instead of hunting for them. See crafting stations for the full list.

FAQ

Why can't I break the goo with my hammer or sword?

Goo piles only react to the Pickaxe. Weapons, the Hammer and torches don't damage them.

Is Clay in the free demo?

No. According to the developers, Clay and the Pickaxe were added for the full release.

How much Clay does one goo pile give?

It varies — drops are random. Players report getting between 3 and 5 from a pile, so you may need to break several.
